A membership committee, composed of club members, decides who is and isn’t granted access to each specific club. (So, it’s entirely subjective.) Kim Kardashian and the Real Housewives are in the same category as lawyers and hedge fund managers, as former membership director Tim Geary told the Hollywood Reporter — both lacking in the je ne sais quoi that deems one worthy of Soho House. In a fifth-anniversary oral history of LA’s Soho House, the Hollywood Reporter called it “the most important club in Hollywood — a high-wattage magnet for A-listers and dealmakers.” Here, not just any industry member is given star treatment or even allowed into the club.
The Adventurers’ Club
The city is a match made in heaven for Soho House, known for its avant-garde interiors, bold color schemes and on-point material choices. The Soho House portfolio now includes more than a dozen different restaurants, many with multiple locations in cities with a Soho House club. Like the clubs, these restaurants are deliberately branded in carefully chosen, often transportive spaces. The barriers to entry, though, are much lower, and in addition to being free to enter, most restaurants have relatively affordable menus.

“We’re not suggesting that an exclusive membership can’t coexist with humility. “In order to deliver a certain level of service and a certain level of experience, and to create a tight-knit group, there is a function of scale and numbers that you do need to be mindful of. Founding members of Water (377 people) will pay $15,000 to join, and founding members of Earth (2,878 people) will pay $7,500.

Women’s Twentieth Century Club
It underwent a hip makeover in 2013 and relaxed its dress code in the hope of attracting a younger crowd. (Since 1987, it also allows non-white-male members.) Henry E. Huntington, the railroad magnate, was a member. After a lull in 2020, when many private clubs temporarily or permanently shut down and plans to launch new ones were postponed, club owners are pushing ahead to take advantage of remote-work policies and pent-up demand to hang out and spend money doing it. Now there’s an influx of newcomers rolling out in the trendiest corners of town, with grand openings every few weeks. None of that has deterred the droves of hopefuls vying for spots in the new class of members-only clubs. Nor, so far, has a slumping stock market and an economy flirting with recession.
The Little Beach House Malibu
Like all Soho House properties, it offers a space for creatives to eat, drink, meet, and relax, combined with that special homey feel for which the brand has become famous. With their high fees and little visibility into who gets in and who languishes in waitlist purgatory, private social clubs have long faced complaints that they’re pretentious enclaves built on a you-can’t-sit-with-us mindset. Some would-be operators have scrapped plans altogether, including the storied Chateau Marmont hotel, which announced early in the pandemic that it would convert to members only but reversed course last month. The members-only Soho House was meant to stand apart from the stuffy clubs that were a hallmark of the London social scene.

A New York Times article notes that the artists who once worked from the space are not the membership base the club is courting. Instead, the new Soho House seems to be banking on professionals in creative-adjacent industries, such as chefs, tech workers, business owners, and as Jackson-Glidden noted, Nike employees. “We’re trying to reach a crowd that’s creative in their souls and like-minded,” Andrew Carnie, Soho House’s chief executive, said.
Club amenities will include private restaurants, bars, and lounges; a supper club; a pool; screening rooms; a fitness center and spa; and 15 guest rooms for members of the club. Few cities are cooler, edgier or more creative than Los Angeles, and nowhere embodies this spirit more than West Hollywood. It is no coincidence, then, that Soho House, the private members’ club favored by media and entertainment types, has opened a second house here.
The club space features 1960s-inspired mint terrazzo floors, dark wood paneling and bespoke furniture. An extension of the club space, the light-filled atrium with the bar at its heart is an outdoor space for eating and drinking. The mint terrazzo flooring and table top seating run seamlessly through the indoor and outdoor spaces, warmed up with golden textured fabrics to complement the shades of green around the bar.
The library, with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and comfy seating, is designed also to host live entertainment, members’ events, and performances. This club taking over the former Redbury Hotel in Hollywood is a transplant from England. The club aimed at creatives will include a traditional English tea room, a rooftop restaurant, a pool, a co-working space, and 36 hotel-style bedrooms available to both club members and the public. It’s planned to open in early 2019, a representative for the club tells Curbed. West Hollywood is a veritable design mecca, home to a myriad of artists and creatives, more interior design stores than you can throw a measuring stick at, not to mention the Pacific Design Center, a complex packed with shops, studios and one-of-a-kind concept stores.
Somehow, the "wrong crowd" managed to infiltrate New York’s Soho House — a crowd of corporate suits. Soho Warehouse is the future Downtown LA outpost of the members-only club Soho House, which has locations worldwide, including those in West Hollywood and Malibu. Originally planned to open in 2016, the current projection is that the renovated warehouse will open sometime this year.
Open last year, the ultra-glamorous Pendry West Hollywood hotel is set just off the Sunset Strip. Designed by the internationally acclaimed Martin Brudnizki Design Studio, the hotel is a sight for sore eyes, while its rooftop restaurant by Wolfgang Puck has deservedly become one of the hottest dining spots in town. The menu at Merois is a magically addictive blend of Southeast Asian, Japanese, and Californian influences, resulting in show-stoppers like the light, but flavor-packed, crispy rice crab salad, or the moreish pineapple-glazed whole fried fish with soy and ginger. Enjoy it all while gawking at the show-stopping panoramic views of the LA skyline. Hidden away from the busy streets outside, the club level of the house features a restaurant, with lounge seating spilling out into the courtyard bar. Meanwhile, the sun-soaked rooftop overlooks the Hollywood Hills on one side and Downtown Los Angeles on the other and also has a Mandolin Mezze Greek-inspired restaurant.
